GAS SCIENCE-WHAT IS THE BEST AIRSOFT GAS?

Green gas is essentially propane with a little silicone oil added in. This addition of silicone oil is meant to help lubricate and clean green gas airsoft guns as they are fired. In addition to silicone oil, many green gas products also include additional additives meant to reduce the strong propane smell. In the end, however, it’s the propane in green gas that powers any green gas airsoft gun. In fact, ordinary propane can be used to power green gas guns as well. However, this is not recommended since the silicone oil in green gas does play an important role when it comes to keeping the gun functioning correctly by ensuring that the various o-rings in the gun remain well-lubricated.
Green gas is stored under high pressure within the gun itself as opposed to being stored in an external canister. When stored within the gun, green gas is kept at a liquid state. When you pull the trigger of a green gas gun, though, a small amount of the green gas is released and quickly expands into a gaseous state. This creates the pressure necessary to propel a BB out of the gun. While propane is indeed a highly flammable substance and is typically ignited by most propane-powered products in order to produce energy, no ignition takes place in a green gas gun. Instead, it’s the pressure created when green gas converts from liquid to a gas that powers green gas guns.
The “green gas” used in airsoft is actually chemically closer to propane. Green gas powered airsoft guns operate by the valve-controlled release of prefilled compressed air (such as propane) mixed with silicone oil (main components for airsoft Green Gas). In some places, users can just purchase a large can of propane from a camping store and an external adaptor to fill a green gas airsoft gun; however, standard camping propane gas doesn’t come pre-mix with silicone oil. If users choose to use propane gas tanks instead of airsoft green gas, they will need to occasionally add in some lubricant here and there.
The main component of airsoft green gas is pressurized propane gas. In its gaseous form, the gas (propane) is non-toxic and flammable. Though the gas itself is not toxic, when inhaled in a large amount; it could cause the victim to suffocate; that is due to propane being a heavier gas than oxygen since it is harder to get rid of from one’s lung. However, note that one needs to inhale far more than a bottle of green gas to suffocate; hence user won’t have to worry about suffocation when using green gas to operate your airsoft pistol.

Since green gas bottles contain pressurized air, there are some precautions consumers should pay attention to as well. Though it is highly unlikely, pressurized propane bottles can explode if not treated carefully. Avoid storing the green gas bottle under direct sunlight, as the sunlight generates ambient heat and heat will cause gas to expand. The more gas the bottle has, the pressure it can build-up will be even higher, resulting in a higher chance of explosion when heat up.
In short, just treat your bottle of green gas like any household pressurized gas product like air fresheners or hairspray. Avoid placing the bottle under direct sunlight, keep them in a cool place, and avoid placing the bottle somewhere where it will be at risk of getting dented or punctured.
